Made For Goodness by Desmond and Mpho Tutu
“God does dwell in us. This is the essential truth of who we are. We are creatures made in the image of God. At the core of our being is goodness. This is not to deny the reality of sin. Sin is real. Depravity and cruelty are real. Evil exists. But sin, cruelty, and evil are not our essential nature. They are aberrations. What is normative is goodness...Goodness is our lodestone.” Desmond Tutu
Oh this book! It has blown away any other non-fiction book that has ever held a top spot on my list of favorites. Tutu’s words are tender and strong. His stories are moving. His inner peace and sense of purpose are inspiring. I read this straight through, but can’t wait to go back and read it again, highlighter in hand, and a pen to fill the margins with my thoughts and realizations. This is a powerful beautiful book.
I came across this on a post about my enneagram type, where the blog author declared it to be “virtually a manifesto for the 2w1”. Perhaps that is why it moved me so greatly. I feel honored to share a personality type with Tutu and am in complete solidarity with him in my belief that we are all good at our core and that God’s love is the answer, no matter the question.
